About the Treatment

What Is Body
Sculptra?

Sculptra is made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biodegradable synthetic polymer, not a traditional hyaluronic acid filler. Rather than providing instant volume, it works with your body to gradually rebuild its own collagen, which is why results appear over months rather than immediately.

Sculptra is FDA-approved for deep facial wrinkles and facial volume loss. The same PLLA that stimulates collagen in facial contours can also address volume loss and skin laxity well beyond the face, in the hands, decollete, hip dips, arms, knees, and abdomen. At Body Balance Medical, Teresa Hernandez, MSN, FNP-BC, performs these body applications with area-specific dilution protocols and injection techniques built around each patient's anatomy.

Every body application described on this page is off-label, meaning it falls outside Sculptra's FDA clearance. Off-label use is legally and medically appropriate when performed by a licensed, trained provider like Teresa, and it's standard, well-established practice across aesthetic medicine. A multicenter U.S. chart review of 498 patients treated in non-facial areas found the safety profile favorable, with mild-to-moderate treatment-related adverse events, primarily bruising, in roughly 6.6% of patients.

How It Works

What To Expect With
Body Sculptra Treatment

Four stages, from your first consultation to results that continue to build for months after treatment.

Step 01
Consultation

Teresa assesses skin quality, laxity, and volume loss in your target areas, explains the off-label nature of treatment clearly, and answers questions about how Sculptra differs from traditional fillers. You leave with a plan covering session count, target areas, and timeline.

Step 02
Treatment Session

Sculptra is injected with a fine needle or cannula depending on the area. Sessions typically last 30 to 60 minutes with topical anesthetic for comfort. Body treatments generally use higher dilution volumes than facial applications.

Step 03
Immediate Aftercare

Aftercare often follows the "5-5-5" rule: massaging the area 5 times a day, for 5 minutes, for 5 days, to distribute PLLA evenly. Mild swelling and bruising are common and typically resolve within days. Most patients return to their routine immediately.

Step 04
Results Over Time

Unlike fillers that restore volume on contact, Sculptra stimulates your own collagen over weeks and months. Many patients notice improvement within 6 weeks, with results typically peaking around 6 to 9 months and lasting up to two years.

Individual results vary. A series of treatments is recommended for optimal outcomes. Results are not guaranteed.

Where We Treat

Sculptra Body Treatment Areas

Every area below is an off-label application, performed by Teresa with dosing and technique calibrated to each patient's anatomy.

Hands

Thinning skin and visible veins and tendons, addressed with 1 to 3 vials over 2 to 3 sessions to restore natural fullness.

Décolletage

Fine lines and sun damage across the chest, softened with broader dilution volumes for even coverage.

Hip Dips

The inward curve below the hip bone, gradually filled and smoothed through a multi-session series.

Arms

Upper arm skin laxity, firmed through subcutaneous injections spaced 30 to 45 days apart.

Knees

Crepey texture above the knee, improved with a diluted series spaced about a month apart.

Abdomen

Post-pregnancy or post-weight-loss texture changes, with results sustained at 12 months in clinical review.

If buttocks enhancement or Sculptra booty treatments are your primary interest, Teresa covers those in depth on her dedicated body treatments page. On this page, hip dips are one application among several where Sculptra works through gradual collagen growth rather than instant volume.

Why Sculptra

Gradual, Not Instant:
How Results Build

Unlike most conventional fillers, which restore volume the moment they're injected, Sculptra stimulates your own collagen over weeks and months.

Gradual, Natural Results

Builds collagen over months for a more diffuse, natural-looking improvement rather than an instant "filled" appearance.

Works With Your Own Collagen

PLLA triggers your body's own collagen production rather than simply occupying space under the skin.

Long-Lasting

Results can last up to two years, longer than many traditional filler and biostimulator options.

Minimal Downtime

Mild swelling and bruising are common and typically resolve within days. Most return to their routine immediately.

Broad, Even Coverage

Well-suited to larger areas like the abdomen, arms, and thighs, where gradual, even collagen rebuilding shows best.

Who Is This For

Is Body Sculptra
Right for You?

Good candidates are generally healthy adults who want to address volume loss or skin laxity beyond the face, without an active infection at the injection site or an allergy to botulinum toxin or PLLA ingredients. Because every body application is off-label, understanding and accepting that framing is part of being a good candidate here, not just a formality.

Sculptra rewards patience. If you're looking for immediate, dramatic volume, a traditional filler or Radiesse may be a better fit. If you want natural-looking, longer-lasting results and don't mind waiting a few months to see them, body Sculptra is designed for exactly that.

Sculptra treatments at Body Balance Medical are performed by Teresa Hernandez, MSN, FNP-BC, in a LegitScript-certified medical clinic. Teresa also treats other dermal fillers and can help you decide whether Sculptra, Radiesse, or a combination fits your goals.

  • You want to address volume loss or skin laxity beyond the face
  • You're comfortable with gradual, multi-session results rather than instant volume
  • You understand and accept that body applications are off-label
  • You're generally healthy with no active infection at the injection site
  • You want a natural-looking result built from your own collagen
  • You're prepared for a series, typically 2 to 3 sessions
  • You're open to combining Sculptra with other aesthetic or wellness treatments

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Don't see your question? Ask us directly ↓
Is Sculptra FDA-approved for body treatments?+

No. Sculptra is FDA-approved only for facial volume loss, including deep facial wrinkles, nasolabial folds, and cheek hollowing. Every body application, including hands, decollete, hip dips, arms, knees, and the abdomen, is performed off-label. Off-label use is standard practice in aesthetic medicine when supported by clinical evidence and performed by an experienced provider. Teresa's advanced training in PLLA body protocols, along with a growing body of clinical data including a 498-patient U.S. safety study, supports this approach.

How many sessions will I need for body areas?+

Session counts vary by treatment area and severity. As a general guide: hands typically need 2 to 3 sessions, arms 2 to 4, knees about 3, the abdomen 2 to 3, and hip dips or contouring about 3. Most patients need 2 to 3 sessions overall, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Teresa builds your specific plan during your consultation based on your anatomy, skin condition, and goals.

How long do body Sculptra results last?+

Results can last up to two years, with many patients seeing durable improvements in skin quality, firmness, and contour for 12 to 24 months or longer. Age, sun exposure, lifestyle, and weight changes all influence longevity. Maintenance treatments every 1 to 2 years help preserve results as natural collagen production continues to decline with age.

How does body Sculptra differ from Radiesse?+

Both are collagen stimulators, but they work differently. Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) provides some immediate volume plus collagen stimulation. Sculptra provides no instant volume at all, instead triggering a gradual process where new collagen builds over months for a more diffuse, natural-looking result across larger areas. Sculptra also tends to last longer, often up to two years versus Radiesse's typical 12 to 18 months.

Can body Sculptra be combined with other treatments?+

Yes. Sculptra can complement other aesthetic treatments like neuromodulators or hyaluronic acid fillers, and Teresa may recommend pairing it with skin rejuvenation treatments or microneedling for enhanced skin quality across multiple mechanisms. Each combination is planned around your specific goals and anatomy.

Is there any downtime after body Sculptra treatment?+

Mild swelling and bruising are common after Sculptra injections and typically resolve within days. Most patients return to their normal routine immediately, making body Sculptra a minimal-downtime procedure. Following the "5-5-5" aftercare rule (massaging the area 5 times a day, for 5 minutes, for 5 days) helps distribute PLLA evenly and keeps the already-low risk of nodule formation to a minimum.
