Dysport vs Botox: Units, Onset, Spread and Longevity

Dysport and Botox are both botulinum toxin type A injections that relax the muscles behind expression lines. The real differences are formulation and dosing scale: Dysport is measured in different units, often shows first changes a day or two sooner, and lasts about as long. At Body Balance Medical in Summerlin, Teresa Hernandez, MSN FNP-BC, injects both, and both are priced by the vial, starting at $695 for Dysport and $800 for Botox. Dysport vs Botox: The Short Answer
Both products soften the dynamic lines that form when muscles contract. The main difference between Botox and Dysport is not what they do but how they are made, measured and approved. Dysport is FDA-approved for moderate to severe frown lines between the brows (glabellar lines) in adults under 65. Botox Cosmetic is approved for frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet and vertical neck bands. Any other area is an off-label use for that product.
So is Dysport better than Botox? Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on the area, how strong and broad the muscles are, your timeline and how you have responded to toxin before. We offer Dysport injections at our Summerlin clinic and Botox injections in Las Vegas, and your injector recommends one after watching how your face moves.
What Makes Dysport Different from Botox
Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA) is made by Galderma. Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is made by Allergan Aesthetics, part of AbbVie. Both contain botulinum toxin type A, but each is manufactured differently, with different accessory proteins around the toxin and a unit defined by its own lab test.
The difference between Dysport and Botox shapes how the dose is measured and how the effect spreads. It does not make one inherently stronger or safer. For the full picture of how neurotoxin injections work, start there. The short version: the toxin temporarily quiets the nerve signal that tells a muscle to contract, the muscle relaxes, and the line above it softens until the nerve forms new connections over the following months.

Dysport vs Botox Units: Why One Unit Is Not One Unit
A unit of neurotoxin is a measure of biological activity, and each manufacturer defines its unit with its own lab assay. The Dysport prescribing information states that Dysport units are specific to its preparation and assay method and cannot be compared to or converted into units of any other botulinum toxin product.
The Units Rule of Thumb
There is no official Botox to Dysport conversion. In published clinical comparisons, including a 2016 review in the journal Toxins, practitioners commonly start around 2.5 to 3 Dysport units for each Botox unit. Treat that as a rough reference, not a formula: your injector sets the dose for each area based on muscle strength and how you respond. Because unit counts differ, compare total treatment cost, never per-unit rates.
That is why a Dysport plan shows a bigger number on paper. A higher Dysport unit count does not mean a stronger or harsher treatment; it is a different measuring scale. How many units of Dysport vs Botox you need depends on the areas treated and your muscles, not on the brand.
We price neurotoxins by the vial, so your quote is based on the vial size your plan needs rather than a per-unit tally.
Does Dysport Work Faster Than Botox?
Often, yes. Many patients start to notice softer movement with Dysport within 2 to 3 days. With Botox, first changes typically show in 3 to 7 days. Both settle into their full effect in about two weeks, which is when we check in to see whether a small adjustment is needed.
That head start matters if you have an event, a trip or photos coming up. If you are not on a deadline, a few extra days for Botox to settle rarely changes which product fits you best.

Spread: What Diffusion Means and When It Matters
Spread, or diffusion, is how far the relaxing effect reaches from each injection point. It decides whether a broad muscle relaxes evenly or whether the effect stays tightly contained where precision counts.
Dysport is often described as having a slightly broader field of effect at commonly used doses. That can help results blend across a wide muscle, and it calls for careful placement near the brow and upper eyelid, where too much spread can cause a temporary droop. Botox is often described as a little more contained, which is one reason injectors reach for it in small, precise areas.
Brand is only one factor. The dose, the amount of saline used to dilute the product, injection depth and technique all change how far a toxin spreads. An experienced injector plans spread on purpose, so the hands holding the syringe matter more than the name on the vial.
Does Dysport Last Longer Than Botox?
Not reliably. Both Dysport and Botox commonly last 3 to 4 months, and some Dysport patients hold closer to 5. Movement returns gradually as the nerve forms new connections, so most patients repeat treatment every 3 to 4 months.
How long your results last depends more on you than on the brand: muscle size and strength, how expressive you are, the dose used, your metabolism and your treatment history. Rather than promising a timeline, Teresa watches how your first one or two treatments wear off and sets your schedule from there.
Is Dysport Cheaper Than Botox?
Why is Dysport cheaper than Botox per unit? Because its units sit on a different scale and more of them are used in a typical treatment. That makes per-unit comparisons misleading. When you weigh Dysport vs Botox price, the fair comparison is the total cost of the treatment you actually need.
We price neurotoxins by the vial, not the unit. Once a vial is opened, it is prepared for one patient and cannot be used for another, so pricing rounds up to the vial size:
- Dysport: 150 units for $695, or 300 units for $895
- Botox Cosmetic: 50 units for $800, or 100 units for $1,000
Which vial you need depends on the areas treated and your dose, and your total is confirmed before anything is injected. For a deeper breakdown, see what Botox costs in Las Vegas. Payment plans are available through Cherry, CareCredit, Affirm and Klarna.
FDA-Approved Areas vs Off-Label Use
The FDA approves each product for specific cosmetic uses. Botox Cosmetic was first approved in 2002 and is now approved for moderate to severe frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet (lateral canthal lines) and platysma bands, the vertical bands that run from the jaw down the neck. Dysport was approved in 2009, and its only cosmetic approval is moderate to severe frown lines in adults under 65.
Everything else is off-label. For Dysport, that includes forehead lines and crow’s feet. For both products, it includes the lip flip, bunny lines, chin dimpling, brow lift and the masseter muscle along the jaw. Off-label use is common when a licensed provider judges it appropriate, and your injector should tell you when a plan includes it.
Masseter treatment for jaw clenching or a slimmer jawline is off-label for every toxin today. In August 2026 the FDA accepted Allergan’s application for Botox Cosmetic in masseter muscle prominence for review; it is not approved. If that is what you are weighing, read about masseter Botox for jaw clenching.
Is Dysport Safer Than Botox? Side Effects and Safety
Neither product is safer than the other. Both have long safety records at approved doses, and both should be injected only by licensed clinicians trained in facial anatomy.
Common, short-lived side effects for both include redness, mild swelling, pinpoint bruising, tenderness at the injection sites and occasional headache. These usually settle within a few days. Less common is a temporary eyelid or brow droop or mild asymmetry, usually from the product reaching a nearby muscle; careful dosing and placement are the main prevention.
Important Safety Information
All botulinum toxin products carry an FDA boxed warning that their effects can spread beyond the injection site. If you have trouble swallowing, breathing or speaking after treatment, seek medical care immediately.

What Our Patients Say
Dysport vs Botox: Common Questions
Is Dysport the same as Botox?
No. Both are botulinum toxin type A and work the same way, but they are different products from different manufacturers. They differ in formulation, in how their units are measured and in their FDA-approved cosmetic uses, so a dose of one does not translate unit for unit into the other.
100 units of Dysport equals how much Botox?
There is no official conversion. The Dysport label says its units cannot be converted into units of other botulinum toxin products. Using the ratio seen in published comparisons, roughly 2.5 to 3 Dysport units per Botox unit, 100 Dysport units falls in the range of about 33 to 40 Botox units, but that math is a reference point, not a dose. Your injector doses each product on its own scale.
Which is better, Botox or Dysport?
Neither is better for everyone. Dysport often starts working a day or two sooner, Botox Cosmetic has more FDA-approved cosmetic areas, and both commonly last 3 to 4 months. The better choice depends on the area you want treated, your muscle strength, your timeline and how you have responded before.
Can I switch between Botox and Dysport?
Yes. Switching is common, and your injector adjusts the dose because the two products are measured on different scales. Most patients switch at their next scheduled visit. Tell your provider how long your last results lasted so the new plan starts from what worked.
Does Dysport or Botox hurt more?
Most patients describe both as a quick pinch or brief pressure. Needle size, injection technique and your own sensitivity affect comfort far more than the brand does.
What if my Botox or Dysport stops working as well?
A weaker response is more often about the dose, the timing between visits or changes in muscle strength than about the product. Your injector will usually adjust the dose or injection pattern first. Antibody-related resistance is rare, and switching products is an option if the same result does not return.
What should I avoid after Botox or Dysport?
Stay upright for about four hours and avoid rubbing or pressing on the treated areas. Skip hard workouts, saunas and alcohol for the rest of the day. Your injector will go over aftercare with you before you leave.
Not Sure Which One Fits You?
You do not have to pick a brand before you come in. Teresa will watch how your face moves, explain which product suits each area and why, and confirm your total before anything is injected.
